"Es gibt vier Takte in jeder Zeile und zwölf Zeilen in jeder Einheit der rhytmischen Struktur. Es gibt achtundvierzig solche Einheiten, jede zu achtundvierzig Takten. Das ganze ist in fünf große Teile im Verhälntnis 7, 6, 14, 14, 7 gegliedert, Die achtundvierzig Takte jeder Einheit sind ebenfalls gegliedert. Der Test ist in vier Kolonnen gedruckt, um ein rhytmisches Lesen zu erleichtern. Jede Zeile ist quer über die Seite von links nach rechts zu lesen, nicht senkrecht den Kolonnen nach. Das sollte nicht in einer gekünstelten Weise geschehen (was aus dem Versuch resultieren könnte, die Stellung der Wörter auf der Seite strikt einzuhalten), sondern mit dem Rubato, das man beim alltäglichen Sprechen anwendet." Über den Umgang mit Menschen

Einleitung

"Wir sehen die klügsten, verständigsten Menschen im gemeinen Leben Schritte tun, wozu wir den Kopf schütteln müssen.

Wir sehen die feinsten theoretischen Menschenkenner das Opfer des gröbsten Betrugs werden.

Wir sehen die erfahrensten, geschicktesten Männer bei alltäglichen Vorfällen unzweckmäßige Mittel wählen, sehen, daß es ihnen mißlingt, auf andre zu wirken, daß sie, mit allem Übergewichte der Vernunft, dennoch oft von fremden Torheiten, Grillen und von dem Eigensinne der Schwächeren abhängen, daß sie von schiefen Köpfen, die nicht wert sind, ihre Schuhriemen aufzulösen, sich müssen regieren und mißhandeln lassen, daß hingegen Schwächlinge und Unmündige an Geist Dinge durchsetzen, die der Weise kaum zu wünschen wagen darf.

Wir sehen manchen Redlichen fast allgemein verkannt.

Wir sehen die witzigsten, hellsten Köpfe in Gesellschaften, wo aller Augen auf sie gerichtet waren und jedermann begierig auf jedes Wort lauerte, das aus ihrem Munde kommen würde, eine nicht vorteilhafte Rolle spielen, sehen, wie sie verstummen oder lauter gemeine Dinge sagen, indes ein andrer äußerst leerer Mensch seine dreiundzwanzig Begriffe, die er hie und da aufgeschnappt hat, so durcheinander zu werfen und aufzustutzen versteht, daß er Aufmerksamkeit erregt und selbst bei Männern von Kenntnissen für etwas gilt.

Wir sehen, daß die glänzendsten Schönheiten nicht allenthalben gefallen, indes Personen, mit weniger äußern Annehmlichkeiten ausgerüstet, allgemein interessieren. –

Alle diese Bemerkungen scheinen uns zu sagen, daß die gelehrtesten Männer, wenn nicht zuweilen die untüchtigsten zu allen Weltgeschäften, doch wenigstens unglücklich genug sind, durch den Mangel einer gewissen Gewandtheit zurückgesetzt zu bleiben, und daß die Geistreichsten, von der Natur mit allen innern und äußern Vorzügen beschenkt, oft am wenigsten zu gefallen, zu glänzen verstehen.

Ich rede aber hier nicht von der freiwilligen Verzichtleistung des Weisen auf die Bewunderung des vornehmen und geringen Pöbels. Daß der Mann von bessrer Art da in sich selbst verschlossen schweigt, wo er nicht verstanden wird; daß der Witzige, Geistvolle in einem Zirkel schaler Köpfe sich nicht so weit herabläßt, den Spaßmacher zu spielen; daß der Mann von einer gewissen Würde im Charakter zu viel Stolz hat, sein ganzes Wesen nach jeder ihm unbedeutenden Gesellschaft umzuformen, die Stimmung anzunehmen, wozu die jungen Laffen seiner Vaterstadt den Ton mit von Reisen gebracht haben, oder den grade die Laune einer herrschenden Kokette zum Konversations-, Kammer- und Chorton erhebt; daß es den Jüngling besser kleidet, bescheiden, schüchtern und still, als, nach Art der mehrsten unsrer heutigen jungen Leute, vorlaut, selbstgenügsam und plauderhaft zu sein; daß der edle Mann, je klüger er ist, um desto bescheidener, um desto mißtrauischer gegen seine eigenen Kenntnisse, um desto weniger zudringlich sein wird; oder daß, je mehr innerer, wahrer Verdienste sich jemand bewußt ist, er um desto weniger Kunst anwenden wird, seine vorteilhaften Seiten hervorzukehren, so wie die wahrhafte Schönheit alle kleinen anlockenden, unwürdigen Buhlkünste, wodurch man sich bemerkbar zu machen sucht, verachtet, – das alles ist wohl sehr natürlich! – Davon rede ich also nicht.

Auch nicht von der beleidigten Eitelkeit eines Mannes voll Forderungen, der unaufhörlich eingeräuchert, geschmeichelt und vorgezogen zu werden verlangt und, wo das nicht geschieht, eine traurige Figur macht; nicht von dem gekränkten Hochmute eines abgeschmackten Pedanten, der das Maul hängen läßt, wenn er das Unglück hat, nicht aller Orten für ein großes Licht der Erden bekannt und als ein solches behandelt zu sein, wenn nicht jeder mit seinem Lämpchen herzuläuft, um es an diesem großen Lichte der Aufklärung anzuzünden. Wenn ein steifer Professor, der gewöhnt ist, von seinem bestaubten Dreifuße herunter, sein Kompendium in der Hand, einem Haufen gaffender, unbärtiger Musensöhne stundenlang hohe Weisheit vorzupredigen und dann zu sehn, wie sogar seine platten, in jedem halben Jahre wiederholten Späße sorgfältig nachgeschrieben werden; wie jeder Student so ehrerbietig den Hut vor ihm abzieht, und mancher, der nachher seinem Vaterlande Gesetze gibt, ihm des Sonntags im Staatskleide die Aufwartung macht; wenn ein solcher einmal die Residenz oder irgendeine andre Stadt besucht, und das Unglück nun will, daß man ihn dort kaum dem Namen nach kennt, daß er in einer feinen Gesellschaft von zwanzig Personen gänzlich übersehn oder von irgendeinem Fremden für den Kammerdiener im Hause gehalten und Er genannt wird, er dann ergrimmt und ein verdrossenes Gesicht zeigt; oder wenn ein Stubengelehrter, der ganz fremd in der Welt, ohne Erziehung und ohne Menschenkenntnis ist, sich einmal aus dem Haufen seiner Bücher hervorarbeitet, und er dann äußerst verlegen mit seiner Figur, buntscheckig und altväterisch gekleidet, in seinem vor dreißig Jahren nach der neuesten Mode verfertigten Bräutigamsrocke dasitzt und an nichts von allem, was gesprochen wird, Anteil nehmen, keinen Faden finden kann, um mit anzuknüpfen, so gehört das alles nicht hierher.

Ebensowenig rede ich von dem groben Zyniker, der nach seinem Hottentottensysteme alle Regeln verachtet, welche Konvenienz und gegenseitige Gefälligkeit den Menschen im bürgerlichen Leben vorgeschrieben haben, noch von dem Kraftgenie, das sich über Sitte, Anstand und Vernunft hinauszusetzen einen besondern Freibrief zu haben glaubt.

Und wenn ich sage, daß oft auch die weisesten und klügsten Menschen in aller Welt, im Umgange und in Erlangung äußerer Achtung, bürgerlicher und andrer Vorteile ihres Zwecks verfehlen, ihr Glück nicht machen, so bringe ich hier weder in Anschlag, daß ein widriges Geschick zuweilen den Besten verfolgt, noch daß eine unglückliche leidenschaftliche oder ungesellige Gemütsart bei manchem die vorzüglichsten, edelsten Eigenschaften verdunkelt.

Nein! meine Bemerkung trifft Personen, die wahrlich allen guten Willen und treue Rechtschaffenheit mit mannigfaltigen, recht vorzüglichen Eigenschaften und dem eifrigen Bestreben, in der Welt fortzukommen, eigenes und fremdes Glück zu bauen, verbinden, und die dennoch mit diesem allen verkannt, übersehn werden, zu gar nichts gelangen. Woher kommt das? Was ist es, das diesen fehlt und andre haben, die, bei dem Mangel wahrer Vorzüge, alle Stufen menschlicher, irdischer Glückseligkeit ersteigen? – Was die Franzosen den esprit de conduite nennen, das fehlt jenen: die Kunst des Umgangs mit Menschen – eine Kunst, die oft der schwache Kopf, ohne darauf zu studieren, viel besser erlauert als der verständige, weise, witzreiche; die Kunst, sich bemerkbar, geltend, geachtet zu machen, ohne beneidet zu werden; sich nach den Temperamenten, Einsichten und Neigungen der Menschen zu richten, ohne falsch zu sein; sich ungezwungen in den Ton jeder Gesellschaft stimmen zu können, ohne weder Eigentümlichkeit des Charakters zu verlieren, noch sich zu niedriger Schmeichelei herabzulassen. Der, welchen nicht die Natur schon mit dieser glücklichen Anlage hat geboren werden lassen, erwerbe sich Studium der Menschen, eine gewisse Geschmeidigkeit, Geselligkeit, Nachgiebigkeit, Duldung, zu rechter Zeit Verleugnung, Gewalt über heftige Leidenschaften, Wachsamkeit auf sich selber und Heiterkeit des immer gleich gestimmten Gemüts; und er wird sich jene Kunst zu eigen machen; doch hüte man sich, dieselbe zu verwechseln mit der schändlichen, niedrigen Gefälligkeit des verworfenen Sklaven, der sich von jedem mißbrauchen läßt, sich jedem preisgibt; um eine Mahlzeit zu gewinnen, dem Schurken huldigt, und um eine Bedienung zu erhalten, zum Unrechte schweigt, zum Betruge die Hände bietet und die Dummheit vergöttert!

Indem ich aber von jenem esprit de conduite rede, der uns leiten muß, bei unserm Umgange mit Menschen aller Gattung, so will ich nicht etwa ein Komplimentierbuch schreiben, sondern einige Resultate aus den Erfahrungen ziehn, die ich gesammelt habe, während einer nicht kurzen Reihe von Jahren, in welchen ich mich unter Menschen aller Arten und Stände umhertreiben lassen und oft in der Stille beobachtet habe. – Kein vollständiges System, aber Bruchstücke, vielleicht nicht zu verwerfende Materialien, Stoff zu weiterm Nachdenken."

Introduction

"We frequently see that the most prudent and judicious people take steps in common life which astonish us.

We experience but too often, that men who have a more than common theoretical knowledge of the human heart, become victims of the grossest imposition.

We have numerous opportunities of observing that the most experienced and skilful people on common incidents apply the most contrary means, and strive in vain, to operate on others; and notwithstanding their great superiority of genius, frequently depend upon the follies of others, and the whims and obstinacy of weaker minds; that they must suffer themselves to be ruled and abused by persons who possess not half their abilities and deserve not to be compared with them; whereas others, who are extremely poor in spirit and destitute of all intrinsic merit, accomplish things which the wise scarcely dare to wish performing.

We see that many an honest man is almost entirely neglected, that the wittiest and brightest geniuses but too often act a pitiful part in societies where all eyes are directed at them, and all are watching with avidity every word they are about to utter.

We see them sit mute in a corner, or hear them utter only common and trivial things, while an inferior genius contrives to combine and dress up the small sum of notions he has accidentally picked up, with so much dexterity, as to create general interest, and to be thought even by scientific men, to possess no small share of knowledge and judgment.

We further see, that the most striking beauties are not generally admired, while persons who are endowed only with a small share of personal charms excite general admiration. –

In short, we observe every day, that the most judicious and learned men, are, if not the unfittest for worldly business, at least so unfortunate as to be neglected, because they arc destitute of the art of showing themselves in favourable light, and that the most cultivated minds who are gifted by nature with internal and personal perfections, frequently are least capable of appearing to advantage.

By this observation however we do not mean to reflect blame upon those that voluntarily resign the admiration of the titled and untitled populace, to which a truly wise man is sometimes compelled to have recourse. It is but natural that a man of superior talents should be reserved and silent in companies where he is not understood; that a man who possesses genuine wit and a refined judgment, should not demean himself to act the merry-maker in a circle of trifling and empty-headed coxcombs; it is also natural, that a man who is graced with a certain dignity of character, should have too much noble pride to become an equal associate with every indifferent set of people who are of no importance to him, to fall in with the tone which conceited striplings have adopted on their travels, or that he should bend in obedient submission to all the dictates of ever-changing fashion, which but too frequently receives its shape and form from dancers, actors, and tailors, or is modelled by folly and vice; it is obvious, that it is more becoming a youth to be modest and unassuming than intruding, arrogant, and ranting, like most of our young men; that the wiser a noble-minded man is, the more modest, diffident of his own knowledge, and the less intruding he will be; that the more conscious a person is of intrinsic and real merit, the less art he will employ to exhibit his perfections, as a real beauty despises all those mean alluring artifices of coquetry by which some females strive to attract notice. – But of all this we are not particularly speaking here.

Neither do we allude to the folly of the offended pride of those that are actuated by immoderate and arrogant pretensions, demanding to be constantly adulated, flattered and distinguished, and who act but a sorry part on being overlooked; nor do we speak of the offended arrogance of an absurd pedant, who grows illhumoured when he has the misfortune of not being known and caressed every where as a great luminary.

We also do not animadvert here upon the consequences of the conduct of the gross Cynic, who according to his Hottentot system, despises all rules prescribed in Social Life by general consent and mutual politenes; or on the silliness of those eccentric pretenders, who presume to be privileged by the imaginary superiority of their genius, to disregard all the laws of custom, decorum and reason.

And when we assert, that the wisest and most judicious people very frequently miss their aim in conversation, and in the prosecution of respect, as well as in civil and other advantages; we likewise cannot pay any regard to the heavy blows of misfortune which sometimes persecute the best of men; nor to the effects of an unhappy, passionate or unsociable temper, which in many people eclipses the most excellent qualities.

This observation rather alludes to those people who combine the best will and sincere probity with very prominent good qualities, and an indefatigable zeal to pass honourably and smoothly through the world, to establish their own prosperity and to promote that of their fellowmen, but notwithstanding are overlookedand fail in their diligent endeavours to effect so laudable a purpose. What is the cause of this phenomenon? Of what quality are they destitute which others possess, who, notwithstanding their being devoid of intrinsic worth, attain the highest degree of prosperity? They are destitute of what the French call esprit de conduite, of the art of conversing with men: an art which the blockhead frequently catches sooner without studying it, than the judicious, wise, or witty; the art of rendering themselves noticed, distinguished and respected, without provoking envy; to accommodate themselves to the various tempers, opinions and passions of men, without being deceitful; to be able to fall in unaffectedly with the tone of every company, without losing the originality of their character, or demeaning themselves to low flattery. The man whom nature has not gifted with this happy disposition, must acquire by the study of men a certain pliancy, sociability, moderation, forbearance, self-denial, dominion over his passions, watchfulness over himself, and the serenity of an uniformly equal temper; and he will obtain possession of that useful art which only with justice can be called the Practical Philosophy of Social Life. We ought however not to confound it with that noxious and mean servility of a contemptible slave, who suffers himself to be abused by every one, gives himself up to every knave to obtain a meal, humbles himself before every powerful wretch to procure some lucrative post, is silent when he ought to speak his mind freely, assists in the execution of roguery, and idolizes titled stupidity.

In treating on that spirit of conduct, which must guide us in our conversation with men of all classes, I do not however mean to write a book on the art of complimenting, but purpose laying before the reader some results of the experience I have had during a long intercourse with men of all ranks and situations. I do not promise to delineate a complete and regular system of Practical Philosophy of Social Life, but shall give only fragments and materials which will serve as a basis for further investigation."

After their performance on the 9th of May, we had a big breakfast together with Dead Western, hosted by our voluntary hoteliers and organisators Sabine and Marc of NichtsFuerUngut. Starting around 12 am, having the biggest omelette (including 20 eggs), fruits and good local coffee, we kept eating till late - At least till our friends had to leave Frankfurt and go to their next gig in Cologne.

"Welcome to tomorrow! Volume 7 of the esteemed and idiosyncratic series of Robert Johnson affiliated mixes finally lies in the hands of its very own future sailor, principal and chef Ata. The pros and cons of mixed CDs in a day and age, where the recordings of the last weekend (choose the club, please) are only a mouse click (save traget as...) away, have been debated in length elsewhere. Frankly, Ramona doesn't care much, nor does her soul mate Ata.

Never afraid to be different, Ata's first commercially available so called mix doesn't adhere rigidly to the genre's rules. Designed and composed like a good old cassette tape for friends and lovers and rather connected than mixed, Ata presents twelve tracks and songs that are close to him and hopefully soon to your heart. Uncoupled of any urge to be current or hip to the next month's flavour, you will get Italo staples like 'Nonline' by I.M.S., capricious cuts like Marsico's 'Funk Sumatra' and romantic rockets that will sty forever in your mind. Engames 'First, Last For Everything' is such a thing. Ata's selection ebbs and flows, puts the emphasis on cutting rather than blending, makes use of some little special effects stunts here and there and most of all, it spreads that certain aural pleasure only the cracking noise of vinyl can give you. As most tracks have been recorded from the actual platters out of Ata's record box, it is as personal and unpolished as it can get. Some of those tracks have been with Ata throughout his DJ career others have only been discoveries of the last few years, but as distinguished as they might appear, all of them have one thing in common: like asteroids, they are little worlds of their own. Sonically and lyrically. So, you won't have to deal with any fillers, unnecessary bridges or tracks, whose sole purpose it is to be "heard in the mix". These songs work as much together as they do on their own. Each and every one tells a juicy story.

Stories that are as important for the history of Robert Johnson as they are for Ata's DJ heritage. Stories that were told at Frankfurt's long-ago vanished nightlife diamonds like Dorian Gray or Plastik and at clubs that never existed, but always should have been there. Stories that tell the very nature of what a DJ set once was and what it could be today. Stories of pop music, mirror balls, new and old romantics, of the future and the past. Sometimes a mix is just a mix. This one ain't."

Offering a unique kind of hospitality, every weekend, for the last 12 years, the hosts in Robert Johnson play an important role. Picking up our guests is one part of it, taking them out, or hosting a special dinner at Club Michel, prepared by the club´s founders Sebastian or Ata, is another.
For about a year now, a photographic documentation of the time they spent with our artists has started. So far the history of our guests, the people, events and special moments in and around our club has been passed on only by word of mouth. In our new column, we would like to present a photographic insight.

Our guests: on their way from their places of arrival, to the hotel or record store - on shopping trips (buying christmas presents at Manufaktum with Tim Sweeney), during soundcheck, in the restaurant and last but not least, in the club. After few posts, you will notice that there is a kind of recognizable pattern in our weekly procedure, due to the given conditions and logistics of the club`s workings. So it will be the people in the pictures that make the difference - they are the ones making the difference every night.

Over the years, the idea of treating our guests like friends has become a self-fullfilling prophecy.

Ab Mittwoch Live Safer Bar in den Deutsche Bank Türmen anlässlich des Kunstfestivals Globe. Jede Woche Mi. Do. Fr. von 17:00 bis 24:00

Das wichtigste zuerst, die Bar wurde wieder im Maßstab 1:1 in den unübertroffenen Robert Johnson Originalabmessungen angefertigt von niemand geringerem als den Nikolaus Hirsch & Michel Müller Architekten und als wäre das nicht genug hat unser hochgeschätzter Freund Tobias Rehberger das gute Stück mit bedruckten Plexiglasplatten verkleidet.
So weit.
Unsere Lieblings-Barmänner Boris und Tomislav servieren erstklassige Erfrischungsgetränke.
So gut.
Florian Steiner aus Heidelberg höchstselbst bereitet uns seine Kaffeespezialitäten an der La Marzocco.
Mmh.
Kuratiert wird das Globe-Programm von Daniel Birnbaum, Nikolaus Hirsch, Judith Hopf und Willem de Rooij.

Interview with Tim Sweeney for Live Safer

Last month I met Tim Sweeney djing at MiniMüzikhol, a venue Arto Mwambé have been playing at recently. The place is in Istanbul, run by a local hero called Minas. Dancing till late, this legendary night had its finish with a belly dancing track edited by Baris K. - Yaz Gazeteci. Soon coming to Offenbach, we are looking forward to his gig at Robert Johnson together with Oliver Hafenbauer and Manuel Raven on the 18th of december 2010. Tim Sweeney is running, every Tuesday since 1999, his radio show Beats in Space in New York. Featuring, among others, Robert Johnson resident djs such as Brontosaurus, Losoul, Gerd Janson and Ata. On his website you can listen to every show ever recorded. Since then I am still in touch with him, so i took the chance to have a little e-mail interview with Tim. Here it is.

RJ: Hello Tim!
TS: Hi Ramona!

RJ: How is it going?
TS: Sitting at home on a Saturday night in New York after I tried to
make myself dinner (didn't do that good of a job, to be honest. I love
food, but I can't cook!) and working on this interview while I listen
to Hunee's record on WT Records. Not the most typical Saturday night
for me, but I can't complain. Good to be in one place for a little
bit!

RJ: I still can't get this track out of my head. You send me the link
to the radioshow of Baris K, which is mainly compiled with turkish
music, both traditional and contemporary. It underlines the mood of
the city perfectly, the mixture of new and old, not only in the music
scene, but in general. How did you experience Turkey, in particular,
Istanbul?
TS: Well, so far, I have only been to Istanbul in Turkey and for me it
is that crazy mix of East and West. Beautiful old buildings and some
ugly new ones, amazing food, the Islamic call to prayer happening
throughout the day and night, the minaret's along the skyline, and
then the clubbing and house parties like you could find all over the
world. I haven't had a chance to stay in Istanbul for long though.
This last time was my third time there, but it's always only been for
a day or two that I could stay. Not enough time to really experience
everything in the city!

RJ: Is there any remarkable connection concerning contemporary dance
music in form of artist and music exchange between America and Turkey
going on right now, or to be more precise between New York and
Istanbul, you have noticed?
TS: Hmm, well, Andrew Lovefingers from New York first turned me onto
the music of Baris K from Istanbul. And we've both been big supporters
of his music. There's definitely a scene here that's interested in
Turkish music. I remember a friend from APT (a club in New York that's
now shut down) giving me a CD of old Turkish music years ago too. And
they're not in New York, but the B-Music label from London has put out
some amazing compilations of Turkish music as well.

RJ: Is Turkey ready to enter the European Union? What do you think, Tim.
TS: Haha, you want the opinion of the stupid American? That's trouble.
Well, I would like to see them a part of the European Union for sure!
I like things to be progressive rather than protectionist, but most of
them time it doesn't seem to end up that way now-a-days!
RJ: Ok, let's go back to New York. Oliver has been visiting you few
months ago in your studio during his stay in the States. We are
curious about how it looks like in your studio. Do you have any
pictures?
TS: Yeah, I was just putting some studio pictures online actually. You

I've been trying to take more pictures recently. I didn't document much of
anything during the first ten years of the show, so I have to at least
do that for the next ten years!

RJ: You are running Beats in Space since 11 years now, the same period
Robert Johnson is existing now. What drove you to start the show back
in 1999?
TS: I had played on a couple college radio shows when I was in high
school and I really enjoyed it, so I just knew it was something I had
to do once I got into college on my own. I had been collecting mix
tapes of radio shows from London when I was in high school too, so
there was something always kind of magical about radio for me.

RJ: Have you since ever left New York for a longer period than 7 days?
TS: I have, but not often! This year I missed one show. Even though
I'm flying a lot, I like to be here in New York to do the radio show.
I enjoy doing the show live. It's just more fun and exciting that way.
I like the mistakes of live radio. I like the chaos of live radio. For
me, it's what gives the show it's character. Everything feels so clean
all the time in music now. Things don't need to be perfect all the
time.

RJ: Have you, or rather, what kind of musical development have you
noticed in yourself since the last years?
TS: Oh, I don't know the answer to that one! sorry.

RJ: As I remember, last time you have been playing at Robert Johnson
was with Thomas Hammann at a DFA night in February 2009. Anything
returning to your mind from this visit to Frankfurt/ Offenbach?
TS: I remember loving Thomas' DJing and thinking how nervous I was
playing at such a legendary spot with so many amazing DJ's. One of
those "I'm not worthy" moments. I had a great time though (but I did
stay nervous until the very end)!
